use loads of colours and pictures, just short words in markers for description. cut and paste from magazines – pictures of instruments or whatever's going on in his life – e.g. he went deaf so you could get a nice huge picture of an ear and cross it out.
as for the time line itself, it could be straight for the 'normal' parts of his life and rocky, like staggering, short and long jagged lines (think heart failure in a hospital's ECG!) for the parts when he was having a rough time.

Get 1/0 gauge wire and get the good flexible stuff, it makes your life so much easier, trust me i did it with cheaper wire and it was a pain because it did not want to bend.
1- battery positive to alternator post, depends on your vehicle but there is no negative on your alternator as it is grounded on your engine
2- battery negative to ground- short as possible
3- engine block to chassis- this is what grounds your alternator and is the most difficult wire to upgrade, and is one of the most important.
be sure the wire is not touching the engine block as it will melt the wire
