Traffic is a battle that every blogger, or for that matter, every site owner has to struggle with.
The “old style” approaches like exchanging links with other site owners, becoming active in related forums and discussions may seem a little obvious, but the truth is the basics seem to be where so many of us get derailed.
Far too many bloggers chase software to generate traffic for them, in an endless pursuit of some sort of traffic “lottery” when in fact if they spent the same amount of time just covering the basics of quality content in even 4 or 5 articles each week, plus networking with sites of similar nature, their traffic would grow in a far more stable and renewable manner.
Visitors love quality content, and will refer others to your site to share that quality content.
I guess the long and the short of it is that SEO is important, but “VO”, or Visitor Optimization is more important, at least imho. If visitors like your site, they return to it frequently. The truth about seo in my experience has been that if visitors like your content, so does Google, and both of these translate directly into traffic gains.
To step back even further from the forest so to speak, it is important to put a little thought into what exactly it is that you want the traffic for. Web visitors for the sake of themselves is all but completely pointless. So what is it that you want these visitors to do? There needs to be a clear call to action or some sort of well defined process or step you want the visitor to take. Some examples might be are;
- subscribe to your newsletter;
- subscribe to your RSS feed;
- purchase a product from you; end
- some other action.
So to nutshell this, exploring the traditional methods and more creative approaches to traffic generation is important, but equally important is what you are going to do with the visitors once you get them to your site.
Conversion is really what this is about. Traffic means little without some sort of desirable outcome.
Regards,
Ron Davies

A quick lesson I’ve learnt in the field of internet marketing; don’t put all your eggs in one basket, it’s imperative that you have all your marketing efforts spread across numerous sites. Anyway, excellent post, I was able to learn a few things from it, despite…well, keep it coming and maybe I’ll keep coming back.

I’ve been working in the field of internet/affiliate marketing for some years now (not as long as the so called “gurus”), and I’ve found it to be enjoyable as well as challenging with a hint of fickleness, but I’d certainly vouch for it, for those who are in between minds about marketing online. Anyway, excellent post, I picked up a few things as a result of it, cheers.

why didn’t you put a link to you website in the information category, so someone could just see it highlighted in blue and easily click on it, most people when advertising there website to that? Still good video, I’ll check your website regardless

Dear Wynn Las Vegas, we apologize. After nearly a year of busting your chops about how pathetically slow your website is to load, your friends down the street on top of the MGM Grand – the Skylofts – have raised the bar so high the FAA has been forced to reroute inbound LAS flight traffic traffic around it.
Using a 4 month old iMac, on a corporate sized net pipe, running the latest version of Safari with recently updated Flash plugin, the Skylofts website takes 4.3 minutes to load, and this is just the friggin’ video walkthrough splash page….

Reciprocal links are arranged when two web sites agree to link to each other.
Reciprocal links are also known as "link swaps", "link exchanges" and "link partners".
A common misspelling is "reciprical links".
Reciprocal links help you in two ways:
1. They increase your web site traffic, from people who click on the links.
2. Reciprocal links also play a major role in boosting your rankings in search engines
How to set up reciprocal links
Find GOOD QUALITY, complementary sites.
Place a link to them on your site.
Only AFTER you've placed a link to them, email the owner of the site a short, friendly note. Address him or her by name. (If the name isn't on the site, you may be able to find it at DomainTools.com.)
Genuinely praise something on the site. If you can't find something worth praising, delete the site from your list.
Tell the web site owner you've linked to their site, giving them the URL of the page where you've place your link.
Ask for a link back to your site, suggesting a page where the link would be appropriate.
Three weeks later, if there's been no reply, send a brief, polite reminder. It's easy for emails to be lost or overlooked.
Use the phone and/or snail mail. A link from a good site is a very valuable thing. If you can't get noticed by email, consider trying a phone call or posting a letter. They're more expensive but also more likely to attract the answer you want.
Keep an alphabetical record of sites you've linked to and requested links from. You need to know who you've contacted and who you haven't.

My last book, a New York Times-bestselling memoir called An Italian Affair (2001), surprised me with its success, since it was completely different from the just-the-facts journalism I’d written up until then. The book, about an affair I had with a sexy French professor I met in Italy after my husband left me, was full of feelings, food, sex, exotic places and general lusciousness. It was fun to write.
The problem was in writing a new book. Now that I was addicted to memoir, I needed another story. But big stories like the one in An …

Ooh, read this. Ouch. “The critic and erstwhile blogger Lee Siegel, in Against the Machine, a polemic against online habits, makes a list of “five open supersecrets” about bloggers:
1. Not everyone has something valuable to say.
2. Few people have anything original to say.
3. Only a handful of people know how to write well.
4. Most people will do almost anything to be liked.
5. “Customers” are always right, but “people” aren’t.”

In a nutshell, near as we can tell, everything is going to be simpler and Facebook is really sorry that they really mean it about the whole privacy thing. Jay got fired from The Tonight Show & Conan signed a 10 year contract to replace him. NBC gave Jay a show at 10:00 pm when prime-time shows are being viewed, hee, he didn't gain an audience. Conan didn't gain the demographic age group that NBC affiliates needed to maintain the show. So, NBC cancelled/fired Jay again and gave him back his former position to get ratings. They bumped Conan but are required to pay off his contract which was initially 80 million. They negotiated because he hadn't completed at least one year & were obligated to pay him 32 million, with petty stipulations. Conan negotiated another 10 million to be paid to his staff of 200 people because they also were now unemployed. Basically, a spitting contest between NBC & it's affiliates.
