The actual process that Google uses to determine how much an advertiser will receive for any individual click is not revealed by them, but based on what we see in terms of historic results you can get a pretty good idea from your site.

Remember that the value of the click is determined by a dynamic ad engine for each page, and for each individual visitor and visitor category. For example, a repeat visitor to your page is worth less money as a click to Google than a new visitor, generally speaking.

There are a few things that are factored in by Google when they are figuring what any particular ad click is worth on your site, not the least of which are:

  • how relevant is the content on your site to the keyword?
  • how high is the quality of the content on your site, and how often is it updated?
  • how many times has this visitor been to your site? (based on ip, when possible)
  • how many other times has this person clicked any of the other ads and not converted?
  • how many other times has this person click ads on other sites ans not converted?
  • what is the subject matter cost, e.g. mesothelioma ad clicks are worth more than affiliate marketing ad clicks which are worth more than sewing ads clicks, etc. Pay out for any ad can range from pennies to over $20 a click and even more in rare cases.
  • has this visitor already been exposed to this particular ad? (Google rotates the ads as much as possible)
  • where is the ad in the page – is it high up on the page, or near the bottom?
  • and a number of other factors.

The long and the short of it is really that a highly regarded page in Google‘s eyes in terms of content quality and freshness, and the value of the underlying keyword combined with the behavior of this visitor when exposed to ads before.

Yes, it is a very complex ad engine, but the fact is it works very well, and this little ad engine that could is at least in part responsible for Google‘s stellar rise in value.
