Will Google Product Search Kill Affiliate Marketing?

Not really, but it could make the job of an online affiliate marketer a total nightmare in the coming months… selling affiliate products on the web has just gotten much, much tougher.

Why?

Mainly because Google has taken Froogle, which it created in 2002 and re-named/re-branded it into Google Product Search. Now when anyone searches for a product on the web – Google Product Search will list the products and the stores selling them on the web.

Now it should be noted, Google doesn’t charge any fees for these listings and accepts no payment for products that show up first; nor does Google make any commissions on sales. Google makes its revenue by selling advertising via Adwords on the Product Search results pages. Any company can submit products thru Google Base to be included in Google Product Search.

What’s the problem?

Actually, there is no problem for the consumer who wants to find the cheapest price for a product. Google offers this great service which will help you find your product. It just cuts out the affiliate marketer who makes a living by promoting products on the web and receiving a small commission in return for their work.

But there are some very fundamental issues here that also cuts at the very heart of the Internet as we know it. Is Google changing the rules of how it does business by more aggressively targeting not only specific product keywords but much more broader keyword phrases in their organic search results with programs like Google Product Search? And they’re listing their links first in the organic search results or what everyone has come to believe are organic results. This argument is not new, Google has been taking those top spots for years albeit directing buyers to other companies with the best prices and offers.

However, is Google now not just targeting a product name or product – but targeting and listing in the #1 spot all the broader keyword phrases which have until recently been dominated by the ordinary website owner? And even in your own iGoogle personal search, you can NOT place your choice ABOVE this Google Product Link.

The real tricky question here: isn’t Google going from a search engine to a website creator and operator in this process? Is Google now not only providing the results; but is it now creating web pages to match those results? There’s nothing wrong with that, Google can do what it wants, but for the small affiliate marketer it means competition. Big competition. In other words, every website on the net now has Google as a potential competitor in organic search.

Of course, how far Google goes with this broader keyword targeting has yet to be seen. Only time will tell if Google does indeed have affiliate links and affiliate sites in its cross-hairs. Many affiliate marketers on the web will be waiting nervously for the answer to that question.

Again, most people would agree with what Google is doing, since most affiliate marketers only hype the products they’re selling and getting those affiliate based sites out of their search results and off the web may not be a bad move on Google‘s part and for the web as a whole.

However, are consumers now getting the real information on products they’re buying? One of the great things about the Internet is that it has always offered various types of information and viewpoints on any subject matter – including the products that we buy on the web. By placing itself first in organic search results, Google is saying its information and listed products are the ones you should be getting.

Many affiliate marketers have spent years researching and studying a particular product niche and they offer valuable in-depth information on their sites about a particular product or service. They also offer comprehensive general knowledge about products, services and subjects that many searchers genuinely want to find when they search the web for information. It doesn’t always mean going directly to the merchant to buy a product, many shoppers want information first, then make their decision.

While others will argue what’s the big deal, isn’t Google also giving other search results besides the top spot? Yes, but as any marketer who has had a # 1 ranking in Google or any search engine for that matter, will know the top spot gets the majority of the traffic. So Google, by reserving the top spot for itself, will now receive the majority of the traffic, which it can exploit with its advertising.

Google is smart. Google has smart people. And smart people know the longer you have a web surfer on your site and not on someone else’s site, the more money you will make on advertising. By taking the top spot in organic search for every profitable keyword that’s searched, and keeping those searchers on web pages derived from those results, Google can create more business for itself. The poor affiliate marketer and every other website owner will just have to settle for second place.

The ability to fix any problem with your website from anywhere that there is a cell network without the need for a computer is upon us, and yet another reason why the iPhone leaves the Blackberry in the dust.

I just instantly installed an app on my iPhone called “FTP on the go” to edit web pages, set file permissions, or update prices on an item in seconds without the need to do anything other than push a few buttons on the iPhone screen.

This has saved my derrière on more than one occassion when there was an error someone else noticed on any one of the over 60 sites I own, and I fixed it with this cool little plugin right there in the Starbucks, or pulled over on the side of the highway.

I even fixed a site while out with my daughter to see the Christmas lights in the town center!

FTP on the go is therefore Ron’s Cool Tool for the week!

Get an iPhone. Make better use of your time, and get some peace of mind!

Cheers,

Ron

Of course that’s not the toughest question, but it is certainly food for thought, isn’t it?

The early mornings as a full-time affiliate marketer are quite a bit different from how they used to be that’s for sure, but there are significant anomalies elsewhere in my day as well.

It used to be that by around 8 a.m. I had already been working for an hour or so fixing, fueling, and starting Sea King helicopters on the flight line in Shearwater Nova Scotia, which is a military installation just the opposite side of the harbor from Halifax.

Now I find myself considering only one thing once the kids are off to school, and my wife Amber is off to college:

“to golf or not to golf”

It is a complex thought process which involves at very least determining if my clubs are in the car, or if they were even unpacked from the last Internet conference trip. Then, I have to call brother Rick (also an Internet marketer :>) and see if he is available for a round. We usually do the driving range first for a bucket or two refining our slices and hooks into the nets, and then assault 9 or 18 perfectly innocent greens from there.

If the weather is not fair, and you golfers in the readership know the weather has to be REALLY not fair to not play, I take my wireless laptop and do a little reading at the local Tim Horton’s coffee shop which coincidentally serves 2 purposes;

  1. I get to catch up on what is new in the IM world. Doing this for just 30 minutes each day puts you in the top 5% of web marketers for knowledge (Brian Tracy)
  2. I get to greet all the guys I once worked with, many of whom told me I was nuts to even dream of working online. Needless to say, I get a great degree of rather selfish satisfaction fro this. Sad, I know..

This takes me to around mid-morning, which is another story- one about developing real estate with those affiliate marketing dollars- in another post, sorry #;>)

How to Make Money with Two-Tier Affiliate Programs

Whether you are inexperienced when it comes to affiliate marketing, you will find that you need to know about two tier affiliate programs.  Two tier affiliate programs can represent an important type of income to you, so make sure that you learn about it and what it can do for you. At the most basic level, all that a two tier affiliate program is is that wherever you sign on new affiliates, also known as second tier affiliates, you will receive a commission whenever they do.

When you are working on a two-tier system, you will find that being in the first tier is essentially no different from working as a basic affiliate marketer.  The only difference comes around when you are looking to add on that all important second tier of sub-affiliates, where you will start earning commissions while they do most of the work!  While there are some affiliate programs that will take this concept even further and let you work on multiple tiers, it is worth noting that this will run into some limitations and more complex problems.   As the number of tiers go up, so too does the number of people who are just looking to make some money off of other people’s work.

When you are looking at two tier marketing, you will find that it is also called multilevel marketing.  If you are going to be a part of an affiliate program, you will find that you will start out as the first tier.  The first person that you sign up is going to be the second tier that is referred to in the title, and if it is a multi level offering, you will find that you will also consider the people that they sign up part of your network.  Remember that multilevel marketing, also known as MLM is losing the momentum that it once had; today, with so many affiliate opportunities to choose from, you will find that many people prefer to switch from one opportunity to another

Remember that you cannot depend on your second tier to be a reliable source of income for you.  If you are looking to make money using the two-tier program, you will find that you need to think about choosing your affiliate merchant very carefully.  Make sure that you are going to get a fairly high, fairly reliable stream of primary income.  The income coming in from your second tier should be secondary, and you should make sure that you are selling quality product and working with people who have good advertising infrastructures in place.  You will also find that a good merchant will give you a high visitors to sales conversion rate in order to safeguard your investments.

If you are working with a merchant, make sure that they have a good, user friendly site that is as good to you as you are to your clients!  Remember that you should always be able to monitor your own sales to understand what you are bringing in and what you are making.  Look for a merchant that has lots of tools to offer you.

If you are promoting poor products or bad services, you are wasting your time, wasting your efforts and perhaps damaging your reputation beyond repair.  If you recommend a product that isn’t going to do the job, remember that they are not going to give you a second chance; you can kiss that customer goodbye forever!  When you go to pick what affiliate program you want to be a part of, make sure that you research it and make sure that you can keep your visitors trust.  When you are looking to make sure that you are getting into the right opportunity, beware of those that want you to sell memberships more than they want you to sell products.  This means that you should beware of systems with low pay first tiers and high-pay second tiers.

Make sure that when you think about affiliate marketing that you think about what has to be done when you are looking for single or two-tier programs. Both programs have merit, but think about both of them.

With a two tier profit program, you will have the potential for high sales and for commissions from your second tier.  You will also have more customers to work with and because of this, you income will be a great deal more stable and impressive.  You will find that you can nurture life long site and brand loyalty in this fashion if you are careful.

With the two-tier system, if you keep the right information in mind, you will be able make a real difference to your income.  Make sure that you get the profits that you need, do your research and take a look at how you can make this system work for you!
